He was predeceased by: his parents, Paris Preston Johnson and Mary Louise Johnson (Donovan); his wife Frieda Jane Johnson; and his siblings, Marvin Johnson and Della Gober.
He is survived by: his children, Samuel Paynter Johnson, Jr. (Shari) and Dawn Louise Johnson; his stepgrandson Jacob Daniel Auman; and his siblings, Alvin Johnson and Phyllis Pritchett. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
