He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Ray Merritt and Edna Merritt (Williams); his wives, Helen Jean Merritt (Jones) and Mamie Louise Merritt; and his siblings, Eugene Merritt and Neva Harper.
He is survived by: his children, John H. Merritt, Jr. (Kelly) of Delmar, Melanie L. D'Armi (Kelly) of Laurel, DE and Crystal R. Prentice (Bill) of Cleona, PA; and his stepchildren, John P. Ellmore of Glenolden, PA, Florence H Coia (John) of Laurel and Mary E Twilley (Howard) of Laurel. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren; five step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; six great step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
