He was predeceased by: his parents, Helen Foskey Steele and T. Elwood Steele, Jr.; his sister Phyllis Hitchens (Steele) of Georgetown; and his significant other Michael J. Thawley. He is survived by: his nieces, Sherry Swift (Norman) and Kelly DeLeon (Brian); his brother-in-law Gerald Hitchens; and his great-nephews, Matthew Eskridge (Sabrina), Shane Eskridge (Tori), Lane DeLeon (Brittney), Trace DeLeon (Shelby), Joshua and Jacob Swift. He is also survived by 1 great great nephew and 2 great great nieces.
