He was predeceased by: his father Cleveland Short; his grandchildren, Moriah Sutton, Noel Short and Casey Zitvogel; and his pet Holly.

He is survived by: his mother Beatrice Short; his wife Barbara Short; his children, Richard C Short (Brandi), Kenneth Richardson (Billie Jo), Laura Pepper (David), Margaret Richardson and Susan Oldham (Terry); his sister Sharon Beauchamp (Richard); and his aunt Joyce Warrington. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
