He is survived by: his spouse Tayloria; his children, Kimberley Patrice Pinkney, Asha Pinkney Gillus and Azani David Pinkney; his grandchildren, Joseph, Anthony, Katherine, Caleb and Channing; his great grandchildren, Ariel and Noah; his siblings, Lucille, Martina, Lorraine (Wendell), Sylvia and Garnett (John); and his sister-in-law India. He is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews.

“My sister and I, Linda Lloyd from 32 Bryant Street N.E., were deeply saddened to learn of Purnell's death. As you know, Linda and Purnell were classmates at McKinley H.S. My husband, Dr. Walter Sloane, joins us in extending deepest sympathy to you and your family. He and Purnell were fraternity brothers in the D.C. Teachers College chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. A photo of that chapter has a prominent place in our home. May God's grace be with you.”
