Robert M. Layman Obituary
In loving memory of Robert Mansfield Layman, who peacefully departed from this earthly realm on January 3, 2024, in Ellington, Connecticut. He was born on March 9, 1935, in Hartford, Connecticut, and was known affectionately as Big Bob by those closest to him. Robert was a devoted father, adored by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His warm and caring nature touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Robert is survived by his son, Robert R. Layman, his daughter, Nancy E. Layman, his daughter-in-law, MaryEllen Kingston, his grandson, Matthew Layman, his granddaughters, Melissa Tobias and Stefanie Layman, and his grandson, Timothy Layman. He is also survived by 14 cherished great-grandchildren. He will be missed by his later in life longtime companion Janet Chandler . He joins his beloved wife, Ellen Waterman Layman, in eternal rest, forever reunited.
During his youth, Robert proudly served in the Connecticut Army National Guard, dedicating four honorable years to his country. After his military service, he embarked on a remarkable career as a pressman at The Hartford Courant, where he faithfully contributed his skills for an admirable span of 42 years. Robert's commitment extended to various part-time positions, including Royal Typewriter, Consolidated Grocery, Maple Hill Ambulance, Aetna Ambulance, Trinity Ambulance, and Bob Kelly Florist.
In his leisure, Robert demonstrated unwavering dedication to the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department for over three decades. He selflessly served his community, ensuring the safety and well-being of others. Robert also volunteered his time and expertise at the Wethersfield Ambulance, imparting knowledge and compassion to countless individuals. He took great pleasure in assisting with numerous classes and state-level EMS exams. Additionally, Robert generously contributed to the Manchester Road Race, offering his support and enthusiasm as a volunteer each year. In his later years, he found tranquility in observing the beauty of nature, particularly "the birds," from the comfort of his favorite recliner.
In honor of Robert's memory, contributions may be made to the Ellington Volunteer Ambulance, a heartfelt tribute to his compassionate spirit and dedication to helping others.
