John R Chewning wrote a sympathy message

“John was my Algebra teacher at the Asheville School for Boys in 1960-61. He was not just a good teacher but a good friend and great person. He encouraged a love of music and in particular Jazz and Country Blues. On Spring break 1961 we went to New Orleans and listened to all of the Jazz bands in the French Quarter. John had an empathy for the trials of young men coping with becoming adults. He was a great positive influence in my life and in the lives of all who knew him well. John R Chewning”
