He was predeceased by: his father Dr. Edward Messer (Anne); his siblings, Barbara Hugo (William), SJ and Charles Messer; and also Peggy Messer.

He is survived by: his wife Janice; his daughters, Stephanie Perl and Julie Messer; his son-in-law Adam Perl; his grandchildren, Ethan, Isabella Perl, William and Matthew Roby; and his brothers, Edward, Richard (Ann) and Robert (Janice). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society or, Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
