He was predeceased by: his parents, Cyril Coates and Jean Coates (Murphy); and his sisters, Nancy Suski, Marcia "Ginger" St. John and Gail Ryan.

He is survived by: his son Jason Michael Coates; his daughter-in-law Audra Armour of Bristol; his daughter Cassandra Geel (Regan Sloan) of Terryville; his grandchildren, Evan Coates, Jordan Davis, Brooklyn Geel, Jesslyn Desjardins and TJ Desjardins; his great grandchild Kamdyn; and the mother of his child June Chapman. He is also survived by Several nieces, nephews, cousins.
