Michael John Higgins Obituary
Michael John Higgins, 66, passed away on October 10, 2023 at his home in Stratford, CT. Born in New York City, son of the late John and Eileen (Howley) Higgins, he was a beloved brother to his six siblings and an adored uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
Among his many other talents, Mike was a wizard at electrical engineering, working most recently as Senior Electrical Consultant with van Zelm Heywood & Shadford, and previously with Fletcher Thompson. He thoroughly enjoyed his work with the ACE Mentor Program for over 20 years, where he helped engage, excite and enlighten high school students interested in pursuing careers in engineering. He loved supporting STEM kids and their advancement into the industry.
Mike enjoyed biking, hiking, playing golf, and most importantly giving the gift of his time and energy to others. He was the kindest of souls, an incredibly generous and thoughtful person and a phenomenal listener. He was always logical and curious, and as a child took things apart just to see how they worked. (And then put them back together - sometimes with fewer parts - such that they'd work better.). He battled health issues over the years, but always kept a cheerful spirit and attitude. He was often quiet and unassuming, and then would unexpectedly jump in with a perfectly timed joke. To know Mike was to appreciate that he would show up late to every gathering, but usually with APs (Arnold Palmers) and a home baked cinnamon coffee cake.
His family and friends will miss his steady and constant support, his quick wit, his unwavering love of family, his champion hugs, and his old school, and multi-screen tech setup on the family zooms. Mike is survived by his six brothers and sisters: Mark Higgins and his wife Maureen, Cara Skourtis and her husband Steve, Tim Higgins, Jory Higgins and his wife Mary, Sheila Druskin and her husband Steve, and Kerry Miserendino and her husband Tom, as well as 13 beloved nieces and nephews, who some knew best as "Uncle Sparky.".
Mike's family will receive visitors on Sunday, October 22 from 3-6 p.m. at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. His funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk. Interment will be private.
