He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard and Rosellen (Ordway). He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth "Liz" Johnson (Kobylarz); his children, Donald T. Johnson of Bristol, Mark Johnson (Danielle) of Plainville, Jennilyn Moros of New Britain and Kyle Moros (Colleen) of Kensington; his grandchildren, Summer and Mason; and his siblings, Doug (Joan Johnson), Jen Johnson (Jim Miller), Richard Johnson Jr. of East Haven, Lee (Kathy Johnson) and Neal Johnson of Plantsville. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
