He was predeceased by: his parents, James E. O'Brien and Anne F. O'Brien (O'Keefe); his wife Lois Shove; his children, Donald W. O'Brien, Jr. and Theresa O'Brien; his granddaughter Eden Camille Nietupski; and his close friend Jean Schiliro.

He is survived by: his children, Michael (Kathleen O'Brien) of Salisbury, MA, Richard (Ellen O'Brien) of Winthrop, ME, Marty (Wendy O'Brien) of Milford, Peggy (James O'Toole) of Bloomfield and Steve (Kathryn-Ann O'Brien) of Simsbury. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
