He was predeceased by: his parents, Francisco Nieves and Amelia Nieves (Maldonado). He is survived by: his wife Rosa Nieves (Garcia); his son Nelson Nieves, Jr.; and his siblings, Antonio Nieves of Hartford, Maritza Nieves of Manchester, Maria Nieves of Puerto Rico and Adneris Nieves of Hartford. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
