Thomas J. Guarcello Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas J. Guarcello on July 24, 2023. Tom "TG" was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and cherished community member. He touched the lives of everyone he met through his sense of humor, fun-loving nature, compassion, love of life, and affection for those he held dear. Tom's joy was infectious, and treated everyone with the same open arms, good-natured smile, and deep love, no matter who you were.

Born on July 5, 1956, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Tom grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he attended Fairfield College Preparatory School through high school and Fairfield University, obtaining a B.A. in English and M.A. in Education and Media. Tom played for Fairfield University's Varsity golf team and pursued his love for the game his entire life. He joined his parents at Fairfield University, where his mom, Ruth, worked in the Graduate Registrar's Office, and his dad, Mario, was a professor in the Foreign Language department. Some may even recall Tom's passion for school spirit as Fairfield's mascot, the "Stag" his senior year.

Tom was a voracious reader and talented writer. His career began at Connecticut Public Television (CPTV), and he shifted his talents to become a freelance video engineer and sound technologist. Tom's work exposed him to captivating people and locations, including fly fishing with Tom Brokaw, an interview with Bruce Springsteen where he was invited for a few shots of tequila with the "Boss," and a memorable interview with Bill Moyers. However, Tom's most treasured role was that of husband, father, and grandfather.

Tom was an avid sports fan and could recall statistics, team records, athletic performances, and was a master of sports trivia, astounding his family. His passion for athletics influenced his son Nick and daughter Carly, who became passionate athletes.

Family was the cornerstone of Tom's life, exemplified by 39 years of marriage with his wife, Sue, after eight years of dating and having met at Fairfield U. Together, Tom and Sue raised two remarkable children, Nick Guarcello (wife, Carol Steffli Guarcello, son Austin, and daughter, Savannah) and Carly Guarcello Martinez (husband, Carlos Martinez, and son, Mateo). Tom adored his new role as "TG"—NOT grandpa—entertaining his grandchildren endlessly. He is also survived by sister Cathy Guarcello and brother Mario Guarcello.

In the community, Tom volunteered at The United Church of Rowayton, coached his children's sports teams, donated blood every six weeks, and supported countless charitable organizations. He leaves a legacy of love, compassion, and humility that will continue to inspire us all.

The calling hours at Magner Funeral Home are on Saturday, July 29, from 4 pm to 7pm. The memorial service to honor Tom's life is on Sunday, July 30, at 1 pm and will be held at the United Church of Rowayton. In place of flowers, the family kindly requests scholarship donations to: United Church of Rowayton Livingston Scholarship Fund (https://secure.myvanco.com).

Please make sure to note that donations are in memory of Tom Guarcello.
