Joseph Mastrianna Obituary

Joseph (Joe) Mastrianna peacefully passed away on Tuesday December 26, 2023 at his home in Norwalk, CT. Joe was born on November 1, 1936 to Patsy and Agnes (nee Zullo) Mastrianna and was their only child. He was born into a large and loving family, with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Joe lived his entire life in Norwalk and was proud of his city and his Italian heritage.

He traveled the world with his beloved wife, of 64 years, Marilyn (nee Gulyas). They enjoyed their many trips "Out West" to Las Vegas, Arizona and Hawaii, and their trips to Europe, especially their time in Italy.

Joe and Marilyn met at West Avenue School, when he was in the 2nd grade and she was in 1st. They both graduated from Norwalk High, in the Class of 1955 and 1956. They dated after high school, and were married on September 19, 1959, after Joe returned from serving in the Air Force during the Korean War era. Together they raised their family and taught them the value of hard work, the importance of faith and family and the spirit of adventure.

Joe enjoyed 2 successful careers, first as a Norwalk Police Officer from 1965 to 1986. He truly loved his work being a Cop, often sharing stories of his time on the force, and the many friendships he made along the way. His hard work and dedication were rewarded with multiple promotions, and he retired as an Inspector in 1986.

Always a hard worker, Joe began his next career the day after he retired from the Police Force, following his passion for the stock market and becoming a licensed Stockbroker. For 30 years Joe loved advising clients and building friendships in his 2nd career. He especially loved his time at AG Edwards.

Finally, at the age of 80, Joe decided to join Marilyn in retirement, but he never slowed down until recently.

Joe was proud of all of his accomplishments, notably his graduation from Iona College in 1976 where Mother Theresa delivered the commencement address. What made him most happy and proud was his family. He was the biggest fan of all of his children and grandchildren, and he spent countless hours enjoying their performances, concerts, recitals and games and was proud of all of their academic, athletic, professional and personal accomplishments and achievements.

He cherished the summer family barbecues at his home, especially when the whole family was together. He also enjoyed a good western, his favorite being My Darling Clementine or anything starring John Wayne.

Joe was predeceased by his parents and step-father Andrew Mancuso, many members of his family and good friends especially Dan Letizia and Dan Mangan.

Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years Marilyn, and their 3 children, Joseph (Sharon) Mastrianna of Aldie, VA, Melissa (Gary) Cybart of Norwalk and Jeffrey (Patricia) Mastrianna of Wilton. His 8 grandchildren: Ryan (Vara), Jeffrey P., Sara (Ryan), Michael (Elizabeth), Evan, Jack, Natalie and AJ. This past year Joe was blessed to welcome his great-granddaughter, Quinn Rose, and looked forward to a 2nd great grandchild in 2024.
