John D. Durkin Obituary
John D. ("Jack") Durkin passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He was 99. Jack was the son of the late John and Ellen Durkin, and the beloved husband of Joan Durkin for 69 years. Jack was born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1924. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated cum laude in 1949. He worked at Milprint Inc. for over 30 years, initially in Milwaukee and then in New York City. Upon transferring to New York, he and Joan moved to Norwalk.
Jack's life can be summed up in two words: faith and family. He was a devout Catholic and a parishioner at the Church of the Assumption in Westport. He treasured his faith and loved to pray. For many years, Jack and his wife attended weekly Eucharistic Adoration. Jack was also the devoted father of five daughters, all of whom admired and appreciated his wisdom and wit. His family will miss him dearly.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his daughters, Mary (Dan) Houlf, Anne Durkin, Colleen Durkin, Eileen (Ken) Sejkora, and Kathleen Durkin; grandsons Daniel (Luciana), Timothy, and Michael Houlf; and Patrick (Erin), Thomas (Milly), and Luke (Ellen) Sejkora; great grandchildren Clare Houlf, and Rose, Conor, Phoebe, Finnian and Elliot Sejkora; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Mary (Edward) Didier and his brother James (Margaret) Durkin. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Jack's certified nursing assistant (Shamere), visiting nurse (Gina), and physician (Dr. Iyer) for the compassionate home care they provided to him over the past few years. The family is also grateful for the kindness and thoughtfulness of Jack's many neighbors. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Church of the Assumption or to the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN).
