He was predeceased by: his father William Butcher; his wife Jeanne Butcher (Kelley); his former wife Ann Butcher (Flynn); his siblings, William Butcher and Jean Ifkovic; and his sons, Gary F. Butcher and Paul W. Butcher.
He is survived by: his children, Susan Smith (Edward) of Middletown and Richard Butcher (Joanne) of Hamden; his grandchildren, Scott Smith (Jennifer), Timothy Smith (Julianna), Jeffrey Butcher (Erin) and Kaitlyn Goodridge (Eric); his stepgrandchildren, Cheralyn Gargano (Michael) and Michael Wahl (Lindsay Cummings); and his great grandchildren, Emma, Madelyn Smith, Quinn, Halen Smith, Adelaide, Hart Butcher, Landon and Callan Goodridge. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
