He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Don Hersam, Sr. (Agnes Cryan Hersam) and New Canaan; his wife Jeanne Marie O'Rourke; his children, Mary Anne (Richard Vasko), John, Andrew and Martin (Kathryn); his daughters-in-law, Beth Hersam and Megan McDermott; his grandchildren, Mary Kathrine Potter (Chris), Abigail (Fiance' Gareth Henry), Eleanor, Merrill, Maren, Maggie, Tucker and Annie Hersam; and his daughter-in-law Peggy Wilson. He was also cherished by three step-great-grandchildren.
His championing of a free press went well beyond his hometown as he served on the board of the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government.
