He was predeceased by: his father Merlin D. Johnstone; and his brother Merlin Johnstone. He is survived by: his mother Constance Johnstone (Piniozek); his wife Patricia Johnstone (Cecere); his children, Lori Johnstone (Raymond S. Smith Jr.) and William D. Johnstone Jr.; his grandsons, Nicholas Johnstone and Corey Beecher (Brittany Solleck); his great grandchildren, Cristal Cruz, Nicholas Johnstone and Elena Johnstone; his nephew Michael Johnstone (Allison); and his friends, Mark Mattas and Rayden Spano. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange.
