He was predeceased by: his parents, John F. Cullum Sr. and Gertrude Cullum (York); and his brother Ken Cullum. He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann Cullum (Luebke); his son Jason (Kate); his granddaughters, Ava Grace and Violet of Baltimore, MD; his sister Janice (Ray Koley) of New Britain, CT; and his siblings-in-law, Darlene and Wayne Hansen of Bloomington, MN..
Post-graduate work was conducted with the National Science Foundation, UCONN, University of Rhode Island and Cornell.
