He was predeceased by: his brother Todd Shafer; and his stepfather Thomas O'Brien. He is survived by: his parents, Barbara O'Brien of North Stonington and Glynn T. Shafer of Joplin, MO; his close friend Rachel Shafer of North Stonington; his sisters, Glenda Spencer (Roger) of Niantic and Susan Pickens (Dave) of Windermere, FL; his stepbrothers, Keith and Thomas O'Brien; his nieces, Kathryn Pickens, Janice Miner and Jennifer Preston (Duke); his nephew Justin Miner; his great-nieces, Jenna Melzer and Jocelyn Tuttle; and also, Mila and Hazel Stammel of North Stonington.
