He was predeceased by: his spouse Marguerita (Cavalieri); his father Luigi Rafala; his children, Kevin Rafala, Joseph Rafala, Jr. and Rita Ann Rafala; his sons-in-law, Robert Grider and Nelson Manning; and his siblings, Carl Rafala, Mary Lastrina, Rose Sapia, Josephine Curcio, Angelina Anderson, Pauline Allen and Jeannette Cassidy.
He is survived by: his children, Paula (Bill McKone), Louise Manning, Michael (Dora Rafala), Anthony (Christine Rafala), Peter (Lura Rafala), Maria Grider, Rosann Rafala (Kelly Voss) and Stephen (Paula Rafala); and his siblings, Millie Failla and Louis (Phyllis Rafala). He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
