He was predeceased by: his parents, Stephen Eastman Root, Sr. and Ellen Griffin Root. He is survived by: his wife Dixie Root (Johnson); his sons, Stephen Eastman Root III and Jonathan Quinby Root (Lizabeth Walden); his daughter-in-law Melissa; his daughters, Amy Luka (Richard) and Lizabeth Gagnon (Scott); and his grandchildren, Stephen E. Root IV, Katelyn Root, Edward Luka, Andrew Luka, Madeleine Root, Aidan Root, Allison Root, Erin Root, Faith Gagnon and Josh Gagnon. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
