He was predeceased by: his parent Francis Gates; and his brother George Gates. He is survived by: his spouse Betty Gates (Lieser); his parent Ina Gates (Buck); his children, Bonnie Madel (Michael) of Colchester and Larry Gates of Somers; and his siblings-in-law, Ann Johnson of Chaplin, Carleton Lieser of Wallingford and Lee Johnson of Chaplin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
