He was predeceased by: his parents, John Gilligan and Kathleen Gilligan (Kennedy); his wife Joan Finnegan Gilligan; and his brothers, Warren "Bud" and Michael Gilligan.

He is survived by: his children, Kevin Gilligan (Patty) of Edina, MN, Daniel F. Gilligan (Kathy) of Portland, ME, Martin J. Gilligan (Holly) of Chatham, NJ, Sharon Gilligan of Simsbury, CT and Patricia M. Squillace (Wayne) of Newburgh, NY; his brother Thomas Gilligan (Marian) of Boca Grande, FL; and his grandchildren, Beth, David, Lauren, Meghan, Robert, Ryan, Brian, Katie, Daniel, Erin, Tim, Brynn, Chelsea and Sean.
