He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Backman and Hazel Backman (Hinxman); his son Kevin P. Backman; his brothers, Knute and Leon Backman; his stepson John J. Lyons; and his stepdaughter-in-law Sue-Ellen Lyons.
He is survived by: his wife Elinor Backman (Donahue Lyons); his children, Carl A. Backman, III of Haverhill, MA and Janet Backman of Wilmington; his daughter-in-law Donna Backman of North Andover; his sister Janet Waugh (Backman) of Austin, TX; his stepchildren, Christopher Lyons of Wethersfield, Peter Lyons (Debbie) of East Aurora, NY and Jeanne Delisle (David) of Cromwell; his stepdaughter-in-law Cynthia Lyons of Uxbridge, MA; his grandchildren, Laurie Backman Hasham (John), Caralyn Backman, Elysie Backman and Jessica Backman; and his great grandchildren, Marina and Ryan Hasham. He is also survived by many step grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl's memory may be made to the Pan-Mass Challenge / Team SuzyQ (PMC.org) which Carl supported as a team member riding 192 miles in the fight against cancer.
