She was predeceased by: her parents, John Wesley Hanes and Elizabeth Agnes Mitchel Hanes; her friend George Carey Matthiessen; and her siblings, John W. Hanes II, David G. Hanes and June Hanes McKnight.
She is survived by: her pet Carey; her sister Susan Caldwell; and her children, Martina (Gary Lively), Connie Matthiessen, Hope Matthiessen (David Boorstin), Betsy Matthiessen (Robert van Dernoot) and John (Alex Matthiessen). She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
