He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Sr. Garthwait and Ruth Garthwait (Ronalter); his brothers, Gregory, Eric, Mark and Stephen; and his parents-in-law, Lorrie Janese and John Camann.

He is survived by: his wife Janet Garthwait (Camann); his children, Mark Garthwait (Melissa) of Torrington, Elaine Daly (Peter) of Cheshire and Kelly Mahl (James) of Georgia, VT.; his siblings, David Garthwait (Cindy), Karen Siwy (William) and Ellen O'Brien; his grandchildren, Erin, Megan, Katelyn, Avery, Carter, Ethan and Jessica; and his parents-in-law, Kathy Kalita (Mike), Ted Janese, Connie Camann, Carolyn and Kim Garthwait. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
