He was predeceased by: his parents, Alexander Paterson and Mary Paterson (Gilerad). He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Paterson (Lynch); his children, Robert Martin Paterson, Jr. and Col. Catherine Ann Paterson; his granddaughter Audrey Paterson of Canton; and his siblings, Morag Flower (Barrie) and Brian Paterson (Cynthia) of England. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
