He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Alton Digby Oakes and Lucinda Oakes (Shorey); his wife Shirley; his sons, Stephen D. Oakes Sr. (Darlene) of Terryville and Eric Oakes of Bristol; and his grandchildren, Stephen D. Oakes Jr. (Makenzie), Brandon Oakes, Derek Oakes, Hannah Oakes, Nathan Oakes and Jennifer Pullen. He was also cherished by youngest of 13 siblings, consisting of 5 sisters and 8 brothers.
