She was predeceased by: her parents, Donald DeMerchant and Helen DeMerchant (Kennedy); her son Vernie 'Butchy Oakes Jr.; her siblings, Gary DeMerchant and Donna LaRue; her brother-in-law Harvey Kelley; and her granddaughter Leanne Oakes.
She is survived by: her spouse Vernie Arden Oakes; her sister Carolyn; her friend Nancy Aho; her sons, Stevie Oakes (Darlene) of Terryville, CT and Eric Oakes of Bristol, CT; her sister Caroline Kelley of Caribou, Maine; her grandchildren, Stevie Oakes Jr., Brandon, Derek Oakes, Hannah Oakes, Jennifer Pullman and Nathan Oakes; her stepgrandson Matthew Esposito; and her great grandchildren, Lily, Maxis, Joseph Pullman and Oaklyn Grace Oakes. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
