He was predeceased by: his wife Margaret Rooney (Crowsley); and his parents, Lawrence Rooney and Ellen Rooney. He is survived by: his children, James Rooney Jr. of Shelton, Gary Rooney of Bethany, Susan Callaghan (Dennis) of Ansonia and Gail Appel of Bethany; his siblings, Larry Rooney of Maryland, John Rooney (Judy) of Wallingford, Dan Rooney (Ellen) of Naugatuck, Patricia Bates (Curt) of Sacramento, CA and Joan Vermilya of Wallingford; his grandchildren, Walter Rich, Mark Rich, Elyse Callaghan, Brenton Callaghan, Kris Appel, Evan Appel, Kim Appel and Sarah Hershman; and his great grandchildren, Pauletta Rich, Emily Rich, Harper Hershman, Isabel Hershman, Josie Hershman and Gavin Herdman.
