It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Richard Backus (Walsenburg, Colorado), born in Nyack, New York, who passed away on December 10, 2020, at the age of 86, leaving to mourn family and friends. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family.

He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Lennie Backus (Conklin) and Sydney Backus; his sons, Ronald (Joyce) and Scott (Shauna); and his grandchildren, Linda Backus, Michelle VanBergen (Noah), Damien (DC) and Shay.

Though the pandemic constrained him to his living space in March, he kept in touch with friends and family.

“My most sincere condolences to the family of COL Backus. I had the honor of serving with Dick in the 1/65 ADA, Key West Defense in ‘72-‘74. I was a 2LT in a Captain’s slot as LTC Backus’ S-2 officer. We later reconnected at an FA OCS reunion at Ft Sill OK several years ago, both commissioned at the same school. We enjoyed a new relationship since then, where I got to know the man, in addition to the commander.”
