He was predeceased by: his parents, Matthew Charles, Sr. and Betty Ruth Schillig (Pokorny); his wife Cynthia Marie Grieser; and his sister Rebecca "Beck" Schillig. He is survived by: his sons, Aden Schillig (Sara) of Texas City, TX and Steven Schillig (Stacy) of Stratton, CO; and his siblings, Betty Halleran (Bill) of Riverside, IA, Barb Carlson (Gary) of Anamosa, IA, Karen Barnekow (Bruce) of Mason City, IA, Shirley Harland (Greg) of Kalona, IA, John Schillig (Tracy) of Easton, KS and Kristine Sandiford (Juan) of Nassau Bahamas. He is also survived by four grandchildren.
