She was predeceased by: her husband Clarence Thurston; and her parents, John Swartz and Lena Swartz. She is survived by: her children, Shirley Krasovec and Daniel Thurston (Eugenia); her grandchildren, Troy Krasovec (Carla), Jeannie Thurston, Jennifer Thurston and Jamie Thurston; her great grandchildren, Nicholas Krasovec and Rebecca Krasovec; and her niece Patricia Leveille. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Velma's name to Sangre de Cristo Hospice.
