He was predeceased by: his parents, Spencer John and Eva Bell Swartz (Swartzell); and his siblings, Charles, Bernice, Beverly, Leroy and Darryl.

He is survived by: his wife Nellie; his children, Russell (Francine) of Kansas City, John (Sheila) of Laporte and Carla Swihart (Mark) of Fort Collins; and his sister Georgia Secor. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
