He was predeceased by: his parents, Ethel Irene (Nelms) and Elmer Boyd Johnson; his brother Darrel Johnson; his former wife L'Jeanne Johnson; his wife Wilma Johnson; his stepson Brian; and his grandson Evan Johnson.

He is survived by: his former spouse L'Jeanne Hixson; his children, Boyd Johnson (Connie) of Detroit Lakes, MN, Darrel Johnson of Hotchkiss, CO, Dell Johnson (Lynette) of Delta, CO and Diane Bursack (Jason) of Fargo, ND; and his sisters, LaNora Palmateer of Bartley, NE and Elda Shields (Harley) of McCook, NE. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
