He was predeceased by: his parents, James Monroe and Lucy Baldwin Shelton; his siblings, James, Jason, Pauline, Annie Shelton, Rosa Vanhoozier, Edna Addington and Rachel Custis; and his grandson Thomas Edward Shelton II.

He is survived by: his wife Erna Auguste Shelton; and his children, Gary, James, Willy Shelton, Doris and Kathryn Shelton. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
