He is survived by: his parents, Melvin Gates and Barbara Gates; his former wife Betty Buch; his wife Barbara Olson; his siblings, Mark Gates and Shelly Vanderpool; his children, Jon-Mikel Tuttle-Gates (John), Alicia Guardado (Andrew), Whitney Jiles (Patrick), Hannah Gates and Makayla Gates; and his grandchildren, Reilly Guardado and Drew Guardado. He is also survived by friends, coworkers, and family.
