He was predeceased by: his parents, Manuel Barela and Mary Barela (Pino); his wife Marijean Barela; his siblings, Frank Barela, Manual Barela, Percilla Romeo, Jessie Feltz and Mercella Barela; and his granddaughter Crystal Barela.

He is survived by: his sons, James Barela (Linda) and Amadeo "Little Mutt" (Jennifer); his grandchildren, James Jr. Barela (Breanna), Natalie Barela-McIntosh (Markus), Zephaniah Barela, Rachel Barela, Elijah Barela and Chasney Quigley; his great grandchildren, Alejandro Barela, Bailee Barela, Calypso Barela, Nakye Barela-McIntosh and NaiLah Barela-McIntosh; his siblings, Barbara Gavaldon (Tom), Judy Solano (Carmel), Savino Barela (Carmen) and Bert Barela (Terry); and his family Mutt Barela.
