He was loved and cherished by many people including: his mother Day; his brother Louis Guy Chelton; his children, Cindy Bowman and Dudley Jr.; and his grandchildren, Kiel Bowman, Brie and Lindsay Chelton.

On the occasion of Dudley's retirement in 1977, Dr. Alverez wrote a personal letter thanking him for his key contributions to the construction of the bubble chamber.
