He was predeceased by: his former wife Balbir Kaur Bains; his parents, Pritam Sing Bains and Gurmej Kaur Bains; and his sister Davinder Kaur Basi. He is survived by: his wife Mankreet Kaur Bains; and his siblings, Harbhans Singh Bains, Mohan Singh Bains and Avtar Kaur Takhar. He is also survived by 6 daughters; 1 son; and 11 grandchildren.
