He was predeceased by: his parents, Clyde Sumter and Lois Sumter; his daughter Stephanie Sumter; his brother Clyde Wade Sumter; and his former wife Margie Ann Woodard.

He is survived by: his wife Teresa Sumter; his children, Christina Griffith of Valley Springs, Tiffney Looney of Waterford and Melvin Sumter Jr. of Waterford; his stepchildren, Shawn Sisney of Waterford, Trena Scroggins and Quenton Keith Sisney of Waterford; and his siblings, Alta Rocha of Modesto, Doug Sumter of Denair, Danny Sumter of Newman, Walter and Johnny Sumter of Kansas.
