Annie Jue Tseng Obituary

March 5, 1925 - January 18, 2017 Annie Tseng (née Jue) was born 92 years ago in Los Angeles, California. The youngest of five children all second generation American-born Chinese, Annie was the daughter of a pioneering and beneficent gentleman, Jue Loy Shew. In the early part of the 20th century, Annie's father immigrated to California from Toishan area, Canton province China.

Her siblings Mary, George, Jennie, and Rosie predeceased her. Annie attended USC where she studied architecture. She drew beautifully and appreciated the finer things in life, always noting a magnificent building, flower, food, person or dress on her daily or annual travels. Annie particularly loved the glamorous and elegant clothing of the California based high fashion and luxury goods purveyor, I.Magnin.

At her own service, she wore a dress bearing the store's signature label. She also loved her boxes of See's candy, which she generously shared and gifted whenever visiting friends, family or the dentist! During Annie's late teens and early 20's with World War II raging, she managed and kept accounts for her family's bustling and enormously successful Forbidden Palace restaurant & bar on Gin Ling Way in LA's New Chinatown.

Here she met her husband, Hsiang Sam Tseng, a then student at Caltech to whom she was married for 62 years until his death last year. Annie ("Ann") and her husband Sam lived in Hollywood then at the Ocean Terrace Condominiums in Rancho Palos Verdes for 20 and 40 years, respectively. Together they ran Pacific Export Company, a trading business, which Ann successfully navigated alongside real estate and stock market investments.

She was indeed a talented businesswoman of the 20th and 21st century. Annie passed away at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, but still thought of "home" as the lovely brick Hollywood mansion at 1820 North Vista, now known for the street that leads up to the celebrity hiking grounds of Runyon Canyon. On this date of publication Mother's Day 2017, Annie will be remembered for her sweet disposition, wonderful sense of humor, girlish smile and boundless love of her three children Lisa, Ling, Wesley and two stepsons, Robert and Vanlee Tseng.
