Richard John Fischer Obituary
Richard John Fischer, age 82, surrounded by loved ones, passed away swiftly and peacefully at home on December 17, 2024 from recently diagnosed late-stage cancer. Richard was born on May 2, 1942, at Mills Hospital in San Mateo to Vivian and Robert Fischer. He attended St. Matthew's Catholic School, Serra High School, and the University of San Francisco. Rich began his career as a private investigator in 1972 and happily worked full-time until this year alongside his esteemed colleagues at the San Mateo County Private Defender Program (PDP). He is regarded as a "legend" at the PDP, which has established an annual award in his honor.
Rich's work perfectly matched his strengths: intelligence, bravery, tenacity, and an ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He will be remembered fondly by his lifelong friends. Above all, Rich was devoted to and fiercely loved by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Grace Sonner; his loving daughters, Deborah Diaz and Amanda Fischer; and his son-in-law, Enrique Diaz. He was a proud and cherished "Papa Grande" to his grandchildren, Mariah Diaz, Drew Diaz, and Avery Fischer-Blackwell.
Rich will live on in our hearts forever, and we will relish in re-telling his many humorous and adventurous stories.
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 1pm at the San Mateo County History Museum located at 2200 Broadway, Redwood City CA 94063.
Rich was an avid animal lover so in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made directly to Pets in Need in Redwood City, California.
