“Don shortly fell in love with San Luis Obispo. Don had a passion for cooking. It started when he was a child helping his mom, Leona, run a café in Oskaloosa, Iowa. One of Don’s tasks was making the home-made cinnamon buns. When Julia Child first aired in the early 60s, Don would make it a point to watch almost every show. Don and his former wife, Jan, were in a cooking club with friends taking turns each week putting on a gourmet dinner.”

“As a result of Don’s cooking passion combined with his dissatisfaction in working for a large corporation, Don embarked on a new chapter in his life. Don went to France to further cultivate his chef skills. He returned back to the USA with a complete set of copper cookware, a Volvo Station Wagon that he bought while in Europe, and ambition! Don opened a shop and catering business in San Luis Obispo, called “A Gourmet Touch”.”

“This was a shop that had the largest selection of fine cheeses and olives for its time, an array of side dishes, desserts, and main entrees. It produced homemade pasta and was a supplier of the pasta to many local restaurants due to its quality. It also carried hard to find products for fine cooking.”
