Edward John Puttre Obituary

Edward John Puttre, Jr., M.D., born to Anne Mary and Edward John Puttre on October 8, 1940, passed away on October 23, 2022. He had been married to Eileen Puttre since December 26, 1964.
Dr. Puttre graduated from St. John's University in Jamaica, New York, in 1963, with a Bachelor of Science degree prior to receiving his M.D. from New York Medical College in New York City in 1967. He served as an intern at Staten Island Community Hospital from 1967 to 1968 before residency in Ophthalmology at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, New York, until 1971.
He then served in the United States Air Force at the USAF Regional Hospital at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, from 1971 to 1973.
After honorable discharge from the service, he moved to southern California and opened private practice in ophthalmology in San Bernardino. He practiced at both St. Bernardine's Hospital and San Bernardino Community Hospital for 49 years until his retirement in 2019.
Dr. Puttre was a lifelong practicing Roman Catholic, and a dedicated and contributing member of St. Catherine of Siena church in Rialto. He coached his children and their peers in multiple sports in the Rialto community.
His musical interests spanned from the Eagles to classical violin to Willie Nelson. He enjoyed classic films, particularly film noir, military films, westerns and superhero movies. He never gave up on the New York Jets. He enjoyed history, especially World War II history.
Dr. Puttre read constantly. Stephen King was one of his many favorites. He had a nonstop sense of humor and was a more than competent dancer. He was a traveler, exploring other continents, most notably Africa, yet still preferred the simple pleasures of a cheeseburger, or vanilla ice cream.
He took classes in art and animation, as well as karate. He had an ability to sit quietly and peacefully. He loved the mountains and the beaches, especially Del Mar or Huntington, political discussion, and animal, particularly horses and the big cats.
Dr. Puttre was predeceased by sons Michael and David. He is survived by his wife Eileen, daughter Deborah, and sons Edward and Kenneth, sister Maryanne Dzienius, as well as four grandchildren, four nieces and two nephews.
Mass will be said on Friday, December 2, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 339 N. Sycamore Ave., in Rialto, preceded by a rosary at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow in the church hall. A private military ceremony will be held at a later date.
Charitable donations may be sent to City of Hope or St. Jude's Hospital.
