He is survived by: his wife Darlene; his sons, Bernard, Jr. (Pete), Wayne Chestnut and James Chestnut; his granddaughter Laurel Weaver (Robert); his great grandchildren, Abigail and Samuel; his grandsons, Christopher Chestnut and Andrew Chestnut; and his brother Fred Fauber (Dolores) of Lynchburg, VA..

Good health prevailed until 2015 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, which along with cancer took his life on March 18, 2018 at the age of 95.
