“I'm so sorry to learn of Joel's passing. He was a dear friend with whom I had the pleasure of spending time both in New York (at Concordia College) and Los Angeles (where I later enrolled in graduate school). I last saw him around 2013/2014 in Portland, Oregon. He looked well, but advised of several concerns associated with his physical health. I'll always remember his kind words, reassuring smile, and assertions that I should be unafraid to openly challenge those in positions of power.”
