Oxnard- On Sunday, May 8, 2022, Mario A. Almada, went to be with Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the age of 51, after getting Covid in January 2022, he survived it only to have to battle the aftermath and damage it caused for 4 more months, but his family and all who loved him, take comfort in knowing that he's at peace.
Mario was born on April 8, 1971 in East Los Angeles, CA to Domitila Lopez Portilla and Mario Almada. Mario was raised in Oxnard, CA since he was around 2 years of age. Mario was a loyal and humble person to all, respectful with his elders and especially his mother, whom he loved and adored. His true, loyal friends he can count on his fingers; El Chichi of Mexicali, Red and Albert, which he met in El Centro, CA.
Mario and his sister, Aurora, were only 11 months apart so they did just about everything together when they were little kids, they played and also got into trouble together, always competing against each other in sports and just about everything, they also confided and relied on each other for comfort and emotional support. As his brothers Juan (Huero) and Danny got older, they'd hang out and do everything together, and sometimes got into trouble. Mario always had their back and looked out for them. Out of all his cousins that loved him dearly, the ones he hung out the most with were Letty, Juanito, Javie, Valerie, and Fabian.
His loving and understanding Uncle Chapo was like a father to him, always bailed him out of trouble and his Uncle Juan was also like a father to him, taking Mario under his wing for a few years when he was an adolescent. Mario was loving towards his children and step children. He held a special place in his heart for his nephew Thomas, for he is the youngest of his sister's children, and the one he saw the most.
Mario had different kinds of jobs growing up, he delivered the newspaper on his bike when he was 12, he worked picking lettuce, celery, and also onion. His favorite thing to do was working on cars, so he went to Oxnard College for auto mechanics. He had a classic blue Camaro which he put a lot of work into and enjoyed it. He also enjoyed people and always offered to help when needed. He would take risks to help others out of the kindness of his heart. We came to find out later on that he would help cross illegal immigrant families, practically for free, from Mexico to the US so they can work and provide for their families.
In his later years, he came to know the Lord, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and lived out his remaining years with true joy in his heart regardless his circumstance. He made amends wherever possible to those he wronged and loved. He went to be with his creator with a clean conscience and all these things is what matters to God, not what man thinks.
Mario was preceded in death by his father Mario Almada, step father Jose Portilla, brother in law Fred Tena, brother Juan Almada, and step sons Leonardo and James.
He is survived by his mother Domitila Lopez Portilla, his siblings Aurora E. Tena, and Daniel Portilla, his children Esteban and Carol Linda Almada, Alec Juarez, and a large loving family with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
"So pity me not for I rejoice in the Lord and enjoyed my time with you. I'm in a better place now than where you are, so make sure you surrender to Christ and fight the good fight, until we see each other again."
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will begin at 12:00pm on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 at the Garcia Mortuary Chapel, 629 South A Street, Oxnard, California.
